1968 - 1970 Lamborghini Islero

After the legendary Carrozzeria Touring closed in 1968, Ferruccio Lamborghini decided to entrust the making of the next model (to become known as the “Islero”) to Touring’s former collaborator, Mario Marazzi. But life was difficult for the Islero with its simple design which was flanked by the spectacular Miura; production ceased after 225 models had been made, of which the last 70 were put on the market in 1969 with a few changes to the body and luxurious interiors in the Islero S version.
The Islero was revealed at the 1968 Geneva Auto Show and was named after a Miura bull that killed famed matador Manuel Rodriguez "Manolete" on August 28, 1947.
The Islero was powered by a 4 liter V12 engine that delivered 325 hp. The engine was mated to a 5 speed transmission, fully independent suspension, and disc brakes. Its top speed was rated at 155 mph. Lamborghini made only 125 Islero.

In 1969 Lamborghini revealed an updated Islero, called Islero S. It used the same engine that delivered 350 hp, while changes to the car made were: brightwork blind slots on the front fenders, an enlarged hood scoop (which supplied air to the interior of the car, not the engine), slightly flaired wheel arches, tinted windows, round side marker lights (instead of tear drops on the original), and a fixed section in the door windows.
Islero S was limited to only 100 units, and compared to a standard Islero it could hit a top speed of 161 mph.
Islero was a very successful model for its era: Ferruccio Lamborghini himself drove an Islero, it also appeared in Roger Moore thriller The Man Who Haunted Himself. In 1975, Paul Rilly entered a modified Islero in the grueling 24 Hours of Le-Mans. It failed to qualify.

Despite the rumors of the Italian super car maker Lamborghini making a SuperVeloce Gallardo, the raging bull is going to bring a factory tuned version of their more compact dream machine to market, but it won’t be wearing an SV logo. Instead the new car will focus on reducing weight as a means of going faster and will be appropriately named the LP570-4 Superleggera when the car makes its official debut in march at the Geneva Motor Show. We won’t come across any official images until a little closer to the reaveal, but thanks to the creative mind of JonSibal we can show you this rendering of what the upcoming Superleggera should look like.
The new Lamborghini LP570-4 Superleggera will weigh in at around 140 pounds less then the standard version while packing an extra 10 HP as well. The new figures will leave the LP with a much more favorable power to weight ratio and is expected to be capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 MPH in only 3.5 seconds. Thanks to Mr. Sibal and TeamSpeed we can also preview a few more of the colorful shades like Orange, Lime green and Yellow while we await a glimpse at the real thing. However we do know that because it is a Lamborghini, owners will be able to color match their leather interior to the car’s wild paint choices

Based on the Murcielago sports car, the Reventon is said to be inspired by the F-22 Raptor fighter jet and is a true super car by all standards. Lamborghini will only build 20 Reventons, with all being spoken for. Eleven of the 20 cars are U.S.-bound.

Admission into the Reventon owner's club will cost a cool one million Euros, or roughly $1.6 million -- significantly above the Murcielago $300,000 MSRP. In fact, anyone who wants the car has been asked to put down a deposit of nearly that amount.

The engine hood is made of glass laminate with open ventilation slits offering a glimpse at the large 6.5-liter V12 engine. The Reventon delivers 650 horsepower and 487 pound-feet of torque.

The exterior of the Reventon is formed by carbon fiber material, known as CFC. CFC is renowned for being both incredibly light and strong. The exterior components are attached to the steel and CFC body with glue.

The Reventon is available in only a single color, specially created for the Reventon model, and named after it. The color is a mid opaque green/grey that lacks traditional high gloss, but retains depth with the use of special metallic particles.

The exterior lighting on the Reventon is fit for a super car with powerful Bi-Xenon head lamps, daytime running lights consists of seven LEDs per side and a further nine diodes for the indicator and hazard lights. The rear of the Reventon is adorned with special heatproof LEDs for rear indicator, brake, and hazard lights which are made to withstand the exhaust heat from the V12 engine.

Created using Alcantara, carbon fiber, aluminum and leather, the interior is inspired by modern aircraft cockpits. Three LCD screens feature a variety of readouts useful to the driver. The instruments are housed in a structure milled from a solid aluminum block, protected by a carbon fiber casing.

The G-Force-Meter is also completely new: this display shows the dynamic drive forces, longitudinal acceleration during acceleration and braking, as well as transversal acceleration around bends. These forces are represented by the movement of an indicator on a graduated 3D grid depending on the direction and intensity of the acceleration. A similar instrument can be found in the airplanes. Formula One teams also use a similar device to analyze dynamic forces

Lamborghini offers some of the most exotic sports cars in the world, and with the latest Gallardo LP 560-4 coupe, that is no exception. This new "entry level" Lamborghini coupe delivers 560 horsepower at 8,000 rpm and 398 ft-lbs of torque at 6,500 rpm via a 5.2-liter V10 engine, making sure to deliver on the "Lamborghini experience" in full.

The coupe is capable of hitting 62 mph in an amazing 3.7 seconds. The sprint to twice that speed -- 124 mph -- takes just 11.8 seconds.

The 560 portion of the car's name reflects its horsepower, while the "4" designation indicates all-wheel-drive. The "4" was likely added to the name in anticipation of the forthcoming rear-wheel-drive variant, which will likely end in "2."

The latest engine not only gained power and displacement, it also features a new "Iniezione Diretta Stratificata" direct injection system. Despite its clearly increased output, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions have been reduced by a staggering 18 percent. With the improved fuel efficiency the LP 560-4 is capable of 12/20 city/highway mpg.

The enlarged and clearly redesigned cooling intakes meet the demands of augmented engine. The front spoiler, positioned low between the air intakes, improves aerodynamic equilibrium at high speeds.

The redesigned four-wheel-drive system, an improved suspension design, and optimized aerodynamics all contribute an improved driving experience. A weight reduction of 44 lbs and decreased friction between the components also enhance performance.

The Gallardo LP 560-4 fulfills the not yet obligatory European pedestrian safety regulations, without compromising the look of the car.

The automated e-gear transmission has been completely redesigned for the LP 560-4. Gear change time reduced by 40 percent, and the driver may choose between five different driving and changing programs. The most performance-oriented "CORSA" setting not only affects shift speed -- it also directs the engine for maximum acceleration. The 'Thrust Mode' ensures maximum acceleration from neutral while the angle of the throttle valve and the clutch are optimized.

An optional carbon-ceramic-disc braking system makes use of eight-piston Brembo calipers up front, and four-piston calipers at he rear. Rotor size is 14.4 inches at the front and 14 inches at the rear.

Bi-Xenon headlights provide plenty of illumination at night, while LED daytime running lights give the car a more aggressive and high-tech look.

Monterey Verdict: Collector-Car Market Surprisingly Strong

Many investors and auto hobbyists alike are understandably still pretty shaky about putting money down on the stock market. But that hesitation hasn't shown any lasting sign of translating to the top of the market for collector cars.
That's the verdict after last weekend's big Monterey auctions, long considered some of the top sales of the year, and strong indicators of what's moving and shaking.
According to the LA Times, this year's Monterey auctions together made more than $116 million; that's down from last year's pre-stock-market-plunge $130 million total, but very respectable all considering.
While those without a personal fleet manager might be holding on to their money a little more tightly than usual, buyers and sellers at the very top of the market partied like it was 2005—the most recent time when the top of the market was surging to ever-higher levels for nearly every type of car. "Some of the once in a lifetime cars—the ones that if you're in the market for 30 years you might only see one or two—did spectacularly," said Dave Kinney, a widely respected values expert and publisher of Hagerty's Cars That Matter, a price guide for post-war collector cars. "And the well-prepared number-one cars and spectacular restorations have done as strong as they've ever done."

The biggest story of this year's auctions, according to most experts, was the hand-built 1965 Shelby Daytona Coupe at Mecum—at a $7.25 million hammer price. RM auctioned off a vintage woodie collection for $7.5 million, with one of them, a 1946 Mercury Sportsman convertible, selling for $335,000.
One of the few exceptions was the '38 Bugatti Type 57C, the so-called Bugatti's Bugatti and formerly property of Ettore Bugatti, which RM sold at a lower-than-expected $1.375 million.
Looking at the rest of the market, things aren't quite as strong as they were a few years ago. Earlier this summer, we reported that the general market for muscle cars has sagged slightly, with parts cost on the rise and attendance down at some of the regional shows.
"The middle market stuff is a little bit softer, so the stretch between a number one and a number two is a little bit greater than it has been," explained Kinney. Yet Kinney said that at Monterey there were plenty of people "paying up for the right car, trading in their okay car or their stories car, letting that one go…because they want the best one in the world."
The cheaper cars—and best deals at Monterey, depending on how you look at it—were to be had from the cars that had slight flaws, no paperwork, no history, or other issues that would only be deal-breakers to the most demanding collectors, according to Kinney.
"In keeping with the idea of trading up, it's a pretty good time to buy your dream collector car, not because they're going for bargain-basement prices, but it's a little bit of a market reset."
It's much better than it could have been. Late last fall Kinney couldn't get return phone calls from dealers and those who he relies on for pricing information. They eventually said that cars just weren't moving, but now it's a good sign that they're actually picking up inventory.
"The ones that ran up in 2006 to 2008 are the ones that went down the fastest," says Kinney. "They've reset to the 2005 level."
Among those are Ferrari Daytonas (1968-73) and 250 Lussos (1962-64). They had reset but then had gone up quite fast.

Seven CIA agents were killed in a bomb attack in Afghanistan, the US agency's director, Leon Panetta, has confirmed.
The dead include a mother of three who was the head of the CIA's base in Khost Province, near Pakistan, the Associated Press (AP) news agency reports.
The Taliban said one of their members wearing an explosive vest and an army uniform had carried out the attack.
US President Barack Obama has sent a message of condolence to the agency's staff praising the dead agents.
The attack was the worst against US intelligence officials since the US embassy in Beirut was bombed in 1983.
It has raised questions about the coalition's ability to protect itself against infiltrators, analysts say.
Quoting a former senior CIA official, AP said the base chief would have led intelligence-gathering operations in Khost, a hotbed of Taliban activity because of its proximity to Pakistan's lawless border region.
The unnamed official added that the bomber was being courted as an informant and was not frisked as he entered the base.
A total of 90 CIA employees have been honoured for their deaths in the agency's service since its inception in 1947, according to the Washington Post newspaper.
'Close to the enemy'
Paying tribute to the fallen, Mr Panetta said six other agents had been injured in Wednesday's attack at Forward Operating Base Chapman.

The circumstances surrounding the attack which killed seven CIA operatives at FOB Chapman, are not yet clear. However, a credible report in Washington says hat the bomber was not searched as he made his way onto the base. According to the report, he was part of an intelligence gathering operation, and was invited onto the base for a meeting with a senior CIA officer.
The attack is a very serious blow to the CIA. A great deal of experience and intelligence tradecraft will have been lost. It is unlikely however, that the attack will have placed a major obstacle to CIA operations in Afghanistan. Those operations take place on a very large scale and involve hundreds, even thousands of people.
We can anticipate that CIA officers are involved in penetrating Taliban and other insurgent networks, locating insurgent leaders for targeting and providing operational intelligence to the military.
"Those who fell yesterday were far from home and close to the enemy, doing the hard work that must be done to protect our country from terrorism," he said.
"We owe them our deepest gratitude, and we pledge to them and their families that we will never cease fighting for the cause to which they dedicated their lives - a safer America."
Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid told the BBC the Khost bomber was wearing an army uniform when he managed to breach security at the base, detonating his explosives belt in the gym.
Mr Obama said those killed were "part of a long line of patriots who have made great sacrifices for their fellow citizens, and for our way of life".
He told CIA employees that they had "taken great risks to protect our country" and that their sacrifices had "sometimes been unknown to your fellow citizens, your friends, and even your families".
'Real danger'
Earlier reports said eight CIA agents had been killed by the blast.
Neither the names of the CIA officials killed nor the details of their work were released because of the sensitivity of US operations, the agency said in a statement.
"Yesterday's tragedy reminds us that the men and women of the CIA put their lives at risk every day to protect this nation," said Mr Panetta.
"Throughout our history, the reality is that those who make a real difference often face real danger."

The flags at the CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia, were to be flown at half-mast in honour of the dead, he added.
Reports say the Chapman base is used by provincial reconstruction teams - which include soldiers and civilians - and is protected by some 200 Afghan soldiers.
The base has been described as "not regular" - a phrase that implies it was a centre of CIA operations in Khost province, the BBC's Peter Greste in Kabul says.
The forward operating base is reportedly used for US drone attacks on suspected militants in neighbouring Pakistan.
In the latest such attack, two people were reportedly killed in a strike on a house in Pakistan's North Waziristan on Thursday, security officials said.
Khost province - which is one of the Taliban's strongholds - has been targeted by militants in the past year.
The number of foreign civilians deployed in Afghanistan has been rising as international efforts there focus increasingly on development and aid.
